Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement using your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. The BMI calculation divides an adult's weight in kilograms by their height in metres squared.

BMI Categories:

  • Underweight = less than 18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight = 25 to 29.9
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Why BMI is Important

BMI is an important indicator of health risks associated with weight status. It can help identify potential health risks and guide healthcare professionals in providing appropriate recommendations. However, BMI is not a direct measure of body fat and doesn't account for factors like muscle mass, bone density, age, and gender.

Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has some limitations:

  • Athletes may have a high BMI due to increased muscle mass
  • Older adults might have a healthy BMI but still be at risk due to reduced muscle mass
  • BMI may not be accurate for pregnant women
  • Different ethnic groups may have different associations between BMI and health risks
